Inaugural Golf Tournament
On Friday, June 14, Friends of Sinn Féin (Canada) presented its First Annual Golf Tournament at the Citycore Golf Club in downtown Toronto. Despite poor weather conditions over fifty golfers turned out for an afternoon of golf and fun. Playing in the shadow of famous Toronto landmarks such as the CN Tower and Skydome Stadium, the golfers sliced, hooked, pitched and putted in support of Sinn Féin and the Irish peace process! Following the tournament, FOSF supporters joined the golfers for a B.B.Q. dinner and musical entertainment at the Club. In attendance at the event was Sinn Féin's national Director of Finance, Dessie Mackin.
Tournament organizers and golfers alike hailed the tournament as a great success. The support of the local community was particularly impressive. Over 50 local businesses, community groups, lawyers and labour activists contributed prizes and hole sponsorships. Based on their success this year, organizers are already making big plans for next year’s tournament.
Following soon after the launch of FOSF (Canada) last November by Gerry Adams, and a successful St. Patrick’s Day visit to Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal by Minister of Health Bairbre de Brún, the success of the golf tournament highlights the strong growth in support for Sinn Féin in Canada.
